Children's Privacy Notice
- Children under 13 can't sign up themselves. A parent adds them to a Family account, or a teacher adds them to a class with the school's authorization.
- We collect only what's needed to build their lessons, never more as a condition of using Tessorio.
- Children's names never go to AI providers. Nothing about a child is sold, used for ads, or made public.
- Parents can review, delete, or stop further collection of their child's information at any time.
This notice is for parents, guardians and schools. It explains how Tessorio handles personal information about children under 13, as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires. Our Privacy Policy covers everything else.
1. Who is responsible
Tessorio LLC, [mailing address]. Phone: [phone number]. Email: privacy@tessorio.com. We are the only operator collecting children's personal information through Tessorio.
2. How a child joins
- Families. Everyone who signs up is asked the same neutral age question. Someone under 13 is stopped, and nothing they entered is saved or sent. An adult 18 or over creates a Family account, adds each child, and gives consent at sign-up for the practices in this notice.
- Schools. A teacher creates a class account with the authorization of their school or district, which consents on parents' behalf for use in the school's educational program, as COPPA allows. Information collected this way is used only for that school purpose. A parent who links their child to a class does so with the class code and the child's own link PIN from the teacher.
3. What we collect about a child
- From the parent or teacher: the child's first name or nickname, grade, age, first language, how they learn best, reading level, pace and interests, and any learning notes the adult chooses to add.
- From the child's use: courses and lessons they open or ask for, progress, answers to check-ins and practice, scores, lab work, and questions they type to the lesson tutor.
- Voice: if the child uses the tutor's microphone button, their browser turns speech into text and we receive only the text. In Google Chrome, the audio is processed by Google to do this. Parents who prefer otherwise can ask the child to type.
- Technical information such as the device's IP address and browser type, used only to run and secure the Service.
We don't ask a child for their email, phone number, address, photo or last name, and we don't require a child to give more information than a lesson needs. Children can't post publicly or message other users.
4. How we use it
Only to provide Tessorio to the child: to build lessons, narration, pictures and practice for how they learn, to answer their questions, to track their progress and show it to their parent or teacher, and to keep the Service working and secure. We don't use children's information for advertising, for marketing to them, to build profiles for anything other than their learning, or to train AI models.
5. Who receives it
- AI providers that build lessons receive the child's lesson requests, answers and learning preferences, with names, emails and phone numbers removed first. They are paid providers that have agreed not to keep the data after answering and not to train on it. This is part of providing the Service, and the Service can't work without it.
- Hosting and security providers that run the Service for us, under contract.
- The child's parent (Family account) or teacher (class account). A child's courses, name and activity are never shown on Explore or to other users, and children can't turn on sharing.
We don't sell children's information or give it to third parties for their own purposes. If we ever wanted to, we would ask parents for separate consent first, and a parent could say no and keep using Tessorio. The providers are listed on our Service Providers page.
6. Parents' rights
A parent or guardian can, at any time:
- review the information we hold about their child: most of it is in the parent view and Settings, and we send a full copy on request;
- correct it, in Settings or by asking us;
- have it deleted, and refuse any further collection or use, which ends the child's use of Tessorio;
- agree to our collection and use without agreeing to disclosure to third parties beyond those needed to run the Service.
Email privacy@tessorio.com from the email the Family account signs in with, or call [phone number]. We confirm the request comes from the parent before acting on it. For a class account, the school controls students' information: parents can contact the school, or us, and we will work with the school to respond.
7. How long we keep it
We keep a child's information only as long as needed to provide Tessorio to them. When a parent deletes a child, closes the Family account, or asks us to delete the information, or when a school ends its use or asks us to, we delete it within 30 days, apart from backups overwritten within 90 days. We may delete a child's information after 24 months of inactivity.
8. Security
We keep a written information security program for children's information: access limited to people who need it, sign-in with one-time codes, hashed PINs, encrypted connections, names removed from AI requests, contracts requiring providers to protect the data, and a yearly review.
9. Changes
If we change how we collect, use or disclose children's information in a material way, we will notify parents and ask for new consent before the change applies to their children.
